Robert Shumake Ran for his Life on the High School and College Track Team

African-American kids growing up in Detroit need to seize every opportunity in order to succeed in life

[USPRwire, Thu Sep 30 2010] Robert Shumake is no stranger to uphill battles. “I ran cross country in high school, a race that literally has its ups and downs,” said Shumake. “I was also on my high school and college track teams where I often felt like I was running for my life. Why? Because as an African-American growing up in Detroit, I knew I had to seize every opportunity I could in order to be a success in life.”

When Robert Shumake seized the opportunity to play sports in school he learned to work hard, both on the field and in school. “I learned to stay focused on my studies and work hard to succeed in all aspects of my life,” said Shumake. “Participating in high school athletics is what taught me the value of teamwork, dedication, perseverance and discipline.”

Today, Robert Shumake is a successful businessman and CEO of a private equity firm called Inheritance Capital Group. Robert Shumake’s dream to inspire young people of the next generation and his love of running inspired his founding the Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays, an annual track and field event that is held every April in Detroit.

The Scholarship Relays represents Robert Shumake’s way of giving back to his community and helping young athletes achieve their dreams, not only on the track, but in life as well. “I am so proud of this event because we highlight academic achievement right alongside athletic ability,” said Shumake.

The Shumake Relays, now in its 6th year, is just the tip of the iceberg. Robert Shumake’s big project at the moment is to create a revolutionary new charter school in Detroit. “My dream is to open a school that trains the CEOs of the future, giving kids not just a foundation for success in any realm, but a foundation specifically geared toward entrepreneurship.”

Robert Shumake ran for his life on the high school and college track team. Now, grown up and successful in his business, Robert Shumake continues running, for his life as well as the lives of today’s youth. His mission is to make education accessible to minority youths as a path to financial success and empowerment. Learn more about Robert Shumake’s passion for education at http://www.robertshumake.us/
