Consumer demand will be fuelled as disposable incomes rise as a result of the expanding middle class and falling unemployment levels. Our forecast that total household spending will increase during the period supports this view as well as highlighting opportunities for investment in the retail sector.
Within the region, Chile boasts one of the strongest economies and, coupled with its low barriers to entry, it will continue to attract foreign retailers. From 2016, total household spending is expected to experience steady growth which will be reinforced by the percentage of the population earning USD10,000-plus and the low rate of unemployment, a reflection of the increasing affluence of the economy as a whole. As a result of this, households will experience a rise in disposable income, which we expect will contribute to a rise in spending on non-essential items, in particular spending within the communications sector, on recreation and culture and on transport are to experience the highest growth rates in 2015. Transport already claims a large portion of total household spending and we forecast that it will increase its share throughout our forecast period. Whilst spending on communications and recreation and culture account for a much smaller share of total spending, both sectors are also set to increase their overall share by 2019.
While spending on 'luxury' items suggests that there is plenty of opportunity for investment in Chile, the government is also committed to providing the infrastructure to support the implementation of this. In Santiago particularly, the retail market is already well developed with a range of shopping centres and department stores offering high-end fashion retailing to plenty of supermarkets and convenience stores.
