Competitive Landscape
Almacenes Éxito continued to be the top player within internet retailing, and continued to show a strong growth of 57%. The company adopted successful strategies like exclusive online deals for products like electronics and appliances, coupons that can be redeemed both online or at bricks-and-mortar stores, different payment methods, click and collect options, and more recently the company implemented at certain points its digital catalogues, which is a new concept that integrates the physical stores with the internet retailing, because in the catalogues customers can find products that are not physically available in the stores, as they are not part of the regular offering, but can purchase them, guided by a vendor and can make the payment along with their other purchases at the cash registers of the stores.
Sales through internet retailing are predicted to grow by a 25% value CAGR at constant 2014 prices, but the predicted rate might be faster, since in Colombia, e-commerce is still in its developing process, with companies even more interested in developing the online channel as well as the interest of pure e-commerce players to develop operations. From the side of consumers, they are gaining confidence in online transactions and with the different payment methods that companies are offering, expected improvement of income, expansion of middle class and expected improvements in internet access in particular in the lower income tiers, e-commerce still has plenty of potential for development in the following years.
