Mistakes in Divorces Can Cost Executives, Says Dallas Attorney Brad LaMorgese

The drive and attention to detail that moves executives up the corporate food chain can undercut the outcome of their divorce, says Dallas family law attorney Brad LaMorgese.

[USPRwire, Wed Oct 27 2010] The same drive and attention to detail that moves executives to the top of the corporate food chain also can undercut the outcome of their divorce, says Dallas family law attorney Brad LaMorgese.

Mr. LaMorgese, who practices family law at the nationally prominent law firm McCurley Orsinger McCurley Nelson & Downing LLP, says individuals with Type A personalities like CEOs and surgeons often thrive when they’re involved in the nuts and bolts of their respective industries.

“But, in contrast, during a divorce, those types of tactics that make them a smashing success in their business life can be detrimental during a divorce,” says Mr. LaMorgese, author of “Tips to Survive the Executive Divorce.”

Mr. LaMorgese says a client’s excessive, hands-on involvement in a divorce almost always drives up the cost of the case, and can lead to unrealistic expectations on the part of the executive client. In a video interview posted on YouTube, Mr. LaMorgese talks about the most important issues for executives facing divorce.

“People in linear careers think, ‘If we do A-B-C, we’re going to get to the result,’” says Mr. LaMorgese. “In a divorce, that’s not always the case.”

Mr. LaMorgese says executives often don’t know the basics about their household budget, including the status of college funds for their children, or even if household expenses exceed household income.

“If someone’s thinking that they’re about to go through a divorce, they should try to educate themselves,” says Mr. LaMorgese.

Among the facts that executives should ascertain include their overall expenses, where the family is keeping assets, and other financial details.

“Frequently, with an executive spouse, they don’t know,” Mr. LaMorgese says. “They need to educate themselves about that financial information. It’s extremely important.”

With offices in Dallas and San Antonio, McCurley Orsinger McCurley Nelson & Downing, L.L.P., is one of the largest firms in Texas specializing solely in Family Law. Each of the firm's partners is a member of the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists and is Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
