[USPRwire, Wed Jan 21 2015] The Mexican Association of Online Sales has launched a new initiative to help drive online sales. The campaign, referred to as “Hot Sale”, includes many of the country’s top internet retailers, including Dafiti, Wal-Mart and El Palacio de Hierro, and features massive discounts from 5-8 September, available only through internet retailing. The initiative seeks to give new users who have so far been hesitant to buy online, an incentive to give internet retailing a try, with the hopes that they will become repeat customers. During 2014 it occurred in September, but in the future, it will be organised in May to coincide with Internet Day on 17 May.

Competitive Landscape

During 2014 Wal-Mart de México is predicted to become the leader of internet retailing thanks to the recent introduction of its walmart.com.mx site in June 2013. Prior to that date, the company was already engaged in e-commerce through Superama and Sam´s Club formats, but it was not until the entrance of Walmart Supercenter that the company ranked first. Wal-Mart is investing in rapid development of its e-commerce site; it was launched with only seven categories and by mid-2014 it was offering 18, all of the general merchandise, and finally, during Q3 2014 it also included Directo a tu Hogar to deliver groceries.

Industry Prospects

President Enrique Peña Nieto recently approved several changes to the telecom legislation which includes a “National Digital Strategy” aimed to approach information and communication technologies to the Mexican population. Regarding internet access, the government acquired the commitment of providing free internet access in more than 250,000 public sites, including schools, hospitals and public squares. As a result of the new legislation, it is expected that the number of internet users will increase, also benefiting e-commerce development.
