Hermione Granger Costume Sales Out-Strip Harry Potter over Book Day

World Book Day is an annual event, held on the 1st March, which encourages Primary School children to read more. Schools up and down the UK celebrate the event by inviting authors in to read excerpts of their books, and many schools encourage children and teachers alike to dress up as their favourite literary characters.

According to Matt Foden, All Fancy Dress’ Marketing Manager, ‘Over the last 3 years we have seen sales of Book Day related costume more than double. This has been driven by the fact that more and more schools are encouraging children to dress up for the event. Personally I think dressing up is a great way of encouraging children to engage their imaginations and further encourage wider reading.’

The single most popular costume this year was the Hermione Granger Costume, which outstripped sales of even the Harry Potter robe. According to Matt, ‘For the first time sales of the Hermione outfit have overtaken those of the Harry Potter Robe. I have to say that this doesn’t surprise me. Girls of all ages have really taken the character of Hermione to their hearts, and she has become a really positive role model for them’.

It remains to be seen whether the Hermione Granger costume will continue to hold on to the number one Book Day costume position in 2013!
