Protect Your Brand on Social Media: What All Business Owners Should Know about Brand Protection on S
Social Media Michigan To Host A Special Session on Social Media Law. Find out the legal aspects of how to protect your own brand and avoid infringing on someone elses at the May meeting of Social Media Michigan
[USPRwire, Thu May 20 2010] The huge success of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and other “Social Internet” sites has transformed the way people interact and the way in which companies can reach customers and prospects. As a fast evolving business model for companies and individuals, the legality of information and self-publishing issues is often overlooked. New start up companies, as well as traditional businesses that are using social media to market and reach customers are developing at a rapid pace, with little cost, and no oversight available from government authorities. Protecting your brand on social media for example is now an issue that all business owners need to understand.
Branding products and services and how the law provides some protections is important knowledge in the social media space. The low-cost, and openness of the social internet that contributed to its explosive growth has also given rise to a number of legal issues about infringement of copyrights and brands. Business owners must be aware of the legal protections available and as well as the restrictions on their own actions to keep from infringing on others. A minimum basic knowledge of how to protect your brand on social media will be increasingly important in this next era of online business.
Social Media Michigan is hosting its monthly meeting to educate Michigan based entrepreneurs on The Social Media Law 101. “May’s meeting will show members how they can protect their brand and avoid creating their own legal issues”, says Urvi Mehta, co-founder of Social Media Michigan. “Entrepreneurs who want to leverage social media need to be aware that the laws do extend to the Internet and they should be aware of the basics of how they can protect themselves and their brand” Said, Janak Mehta, Co-founder of Social Media Michigan.
The May Social Media Michigan event features two special guests presenting this topic; Priya Marwah Doornbos and Karen Evans. Priya is a Business Attorney and the Founder and Owner of PMD Legal. Karen is an Attorney who teaches law and entrepreneurship at Lawrence Technological University, where she is also a Coleman Entrepreneurial Faculty Fellow. The May training will be held at Eastern Michigan University, 38777 Six Mile Road, Suite 410 in Livonia.
Social Media Marketing Seminars are hosted on the third Thursday of each month in Livonia, Michigan. The May event begins at 6:00PM with networking and a light dinner followed by Marketing Minutes & Hot seat at 6:30PM. At 7:30PM a presentation on Social Media Law 101 by noted guests will begin.
The noted guests will address the following topics about how to protect your brand on social media on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the Social Media Michigan Seminar.
- How Does Social Media Affects Your First Amendment Rights To Free Speech
- How To Protect Intellectual Property Online
- How To Avoid Infringing Other's Intellectual Property Online

Social Media Michigan is excited to share this information about protecting your brand on social media as it will bring more knowledge for all business owners and marketers. Janak Mehta said, “if you know what your protections as well as your limitations are, you can avoid costly legal action that, at the least, is a distraction from the actions needed to succeed in business, and worse could cost you thousands of dollars.”
